  • QuNexus arrives!

I'm excited, and I just can't hide it! (chortle)

First impressions - it's TINY. About the size of a nanoKontrol, but the keys are bigger. Decent key feel for an alternate controller, quite playable. It'll fit better in my suitcase than the old Alesis Qx25 did.

Plugged into my laptop, 50 seconds later drivers loaded and I'm up and running with just the basics. Came with instructions on how to get the software, and a MIDI cable. Took maybe 5 minutes to download the software, and register.

Works fine with Acid Music Studio 10, just selected it as MIDI IN and MIDI OUT and *poof* ready to rock.

Tonight, I'm just going to fiddle with it and make sure it plays nice with Sonar X3 (which I'm getting ready to install). I'l post more about how it plays with my genre and software as time goes on.

So far I'm a super happy camper! If this works out, QuNeo next!

Well, after a couple of days I'm still super happy with it!

For one thing, the sucker is built like a tank. It's hefty without being heavy, I can smash the keys and buttons and it doesn't feel like it's going to break. I'm not afraid to really wack it like I was with the Alesis.

Plays perfectly well in SONAR X3. I still need to tackle the editor (tonight's fun) and set it up for controlling SONAR, adjusting what the x/y motion does, and the like.

The pretty lights in a dim room are cool and motivate me to sit down and play - a good thing!

Oh man, I'd better start saving up! If I scrimp and save, I think I can have the money before the end of February.. argh ugh blech.. well, I have a 24 pack of fancy ramen noodles from Japan being delivered tomorrow, that and a few family packs of hot dogs and mac-n-cheese should help me out... le sigh.

Thanks a ton for passing that on! I'd hate to miss getting it at under $200.

Quick update: the QuNexus editor is real easy to use, and in about an hour last night I had the 4 presets on board the QuNexus set up for different purposes:

Preset 1: No tilt, just basic channel pressure/velocity/note, no toggle
Preset 2: Pressure, tilt as pitch bend, no toggle
Preset 3: Pressure, tilt as pitch bend, all keys with logarithmic slope
Preset 4: Same as Preset 1 but with key toggle ON

Ever wanted to perform in an ambient track live, but hated holding the keys down? Enter TOGGLE MODE. You press a key, it keeps on until you hit it again. The key stays lit as well so you can see which notes you have running. This has made certain things a LOT easier for me! I can trigger one note, another few later, go back and end the first one, add another, turn off a few.. great for drone-ish loving!

Pfft. All I need is the AS-606:

                      >.>

That's actually a cool feature. Set up a long evolving pad chord with several toggled notes, play over top of it. Good times:thumbsup:

I had one, it's pretty sweet. It does an incredible amount of stuff for the money. Sad to see the price raising, though =/
                      Meh.

Jeez, obvious not with it today, I looked at that for a good minute, just thinking "I don't get it..."

@Woolyloach: I briefly had an EMU keyboard (ebay buy, turned out to be faulty, got my cash back) that had a key latch mode. Great for drone as you say. Wondered about hacking something together in synthmaker or reaktor that emulated that behaviour...

edit: should've guessed, Reaper has a JS effect to latch MIDI...

@KrisM - LOL! I wonder if I can find one on Ebay (chortle)

@GaryG - E-MU was ahead of their time for a lot of their gear. I was sad to see them go.. le sigh. And Reaper is loaded with all kinds of fun things, I'm not too surprised there's a JS latcher.

And Musicians Friend has shipped the unit! W00t! That's my last hardware purchase for a long while, I need to save up for a new laptop to replace my somewhat aging Lenovo Core i5 box.. and that's going to take a few months.

Well, doue to "adverse weather conditions" my QuNeo didn't arrive in time for me to use it on my AO Compilation #2 track but it should arrive tomorrow or Tuesday. I'll post my experiences with it as well, hopefully someone will find value on that!

The EWI is kicking my butt.. it's going to be a long, slow learning process.. but I'm not giving up!

As for the EWI, that octave transition is a miserable bastard, but once you get it, it's easy from there.
