Regarding the Volka, all I can say is my Korg Kronos' onboard sampler is good, but where it fails is that I can only load so many samples into memory, so I have already reached my limit- if I want new samples, then I have to unload the other ones, and that's a downfall for me. The process of loading and unloading samples is a little arcane, so you have that thing you mentioned about ploughing through a manual. I really need to find a decent sampler that's not really expensive and doesn't have the memory limitation. I've really been enjoying the stuff you have come up with since you got your setup, though.
Back in the day, I had a cheap Yamaha VSS-30 voice sampling keyboard- it was more like a toy really, and had only 8-bit sampling quality, but I was able to do so much with it on the setup I had- with the capability of taking samples via built-in mic or via rca cable- I used to take samples from my DX100 and tweak them- if you want to hear examples of that, you can check out my 'Student of Life' release post in the non-ambient release section.
