  • Looking and sounding great falls a star

I love the sound of the Ensemble Oscillator. If I manage to get a job that module is on my radar...
I may not post anything useful, but at least I do it often

Here's hoping that comes about for you soon! I don't think I could do what you've done with your modular setup. The closest I got was playiing around with an ARP Odyssey back in the early '80s.

      • So I sold some stuff I wasn't using and took the plunge into bankruptcy a month or so ago.

Went with the 4ms Ensemble Oscillator falls a star mentioned recently to start because it sounds like nothing else I own, absolutely beautiful but also very aggressive when required too. Planning on adding a Klavis Twin Waves at some point soon. Been having a lot of fun exploring all possibilities. Barely scratched the surface of the Disting.

Pretty much the same here. And I've got two Mk3, two Mk4 and an EX

So much to try and learn with those multi-function modules.

I look forward to hearing what you create with the Ensemble Oscillator

I'm really enjoying the ENOSC. It'll do some more familiar (at least in modular) sounds with the Spread and/or Balance at minimum, but the interaction between pitch and timbre is just fascinating.

I don't really find the Disting EX fun and will probably never explore it to the fullest, even though it's more friendly than the mk4. But I do find it really useful, while sticking to a modest set of favorite Dual Mode algorithms -- the sorts of things that I don't need in every patch but it's nice to have on tap. I bet the EX really shines for people who work more with samples than I do, though!

              "really shines," why?

It seems like a capable sample player to me, a lot more compact than many options in Eurorack, with one mode supporting multisampling and polyphony, and another six separate samples (good for drums etc.)

Like I said though, I just don't work with samples much... so I stick to the utilities for the most part

I scratched the sample itch for my last video where I used the EX for percussion. And the video before that was an experiment with the ever so popular LABS Soft Piano.

But, in reality, I have the whole LABS collection on my computer and in future the EX will be used for either some of its utilities or its oscillators, including the wavetable algo, which is interesting. I've been making wavetable files from scratch using Sound Forge.

                          • I wound up filling that 18HP gap in my modular with a Mutable Instruments Shelves. I've only played with a little so far, but it seems excellent for feedback loops, sweeping notch filters, some neat tricks with parallel filters, etc. I will probably let go of my Ripples filter as well as the FXDf since they're kind of redundant, as soon as I decide what to put in there instead. I kinda want a Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas, but I don't really need another oscillator in there.

I replaced my Reface CS with an Arturia Microfreak, which I'm much happier with. The Reface was fun to jam with, with simple and immediate synth controls, but not necessarily a great fit for the music I'm making. The Microfreak has a Hold button for drones -- and being paraphonic rather than polyphonic is actually kind of an advantage, in that I can have it hold a chord and then sweep one resonant filter over it to pick out different harmonics. That's probably going to be my main usage of the synth

I'm also thinking about replacing my Lyra-8 -- I feel like I'm in kind of a rut with it and want something else, I just haven't decided what yet. It's got to be something very hands-on, and yet not feel like too much of an overlap with any of my current gear. Maybe a Ciat Lombarde Tetrax or a Lorre-Mill Double Knot...
