  • Nodal a generative music sequencer for $30!

    http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~cema/nodal/

$30 introductory price, but its pretty fun! I have been demoing this to trigger drums with.

    *update*

So far Im finding this great for creating poly-rythyms! Seriously if you are interested in this you should give it a spin!

I've broken out my copy of Nodal today and been messing about with it again. I was considering Numerology (and probably still will continue to...) but I already have this and I'm determined to really learn how to use it fully. I'm trying to get a minimalist parallel sequence going and realized that I would need to actually read the manual...even though Nodal's not broken yet!

What you could do if you want to sync the midi notes you generate with nodal to your daw, is record the incoming midi from nodal and then quantisizie it.

Mini-Tutorial of what I've been doing below.

So I loaded up this template and changed all the instruments to Nodal Out, instead of using Nodal synthesizer. I then loaded up Ableton Live.

I turned record on in Ableton Live and then hit play on Nodal and Recorded the Output into Live as Midi tracks. Make sure you assign the CH's so they are all the same as the Intrument outs on Nodal!

With the tracks in place I began re-arranging the notes so they would trigger my instruments! I also selected all the notes and quantizied to 1/16th notes! Also from here I could quit Nodal as i had all the note information I wanted!

      :D

With this kind of randomness I found I was able to get some very Autechre style beats using the midi note information for Drum tracks!

Thanks for posting this. I just downloaded the demo and will be checking it out. A while ago I had a program called M and it was kind of fun. Looking forward to taking this for a spin!

          Looks interesting.

I like the idea of the sequncer in ADs axon, would this be a broadly similar (though much deeper) kind of thing? (will download demo and play later).

          Cheers.

I think the only thing that I don't like about Nodal, and something which has me on the fence over purchasing it is the lack of a plugin version. It is a standalone app only.

@GaryG : Well it is similar to axon but it gives you quite a lot more flexibility in the fact you can use one instance of Nodal to sequence multiple midi instruments.

The non-plugin version has me on the fence as well... and revisiting other options such as Noatikl. Though at first glance I really like the workflow. Honestly, I won't know until I take it for a proper spin and in any event I have other things such as hardware sequencers that I have yet to fully explore.

I'm really glad you posted this V0RT3X. I gave Nodal a spin a few months ago...and it didn't quite click. But seeing you run with it has me TOTALLY interested in giving it a second date. Would love to hear some of those "Autechre style beats" you speak of!!!

                Got any audio samples??!?

Actually my project i was using crashed and i lost it. Seems that Nodal & live don't like working together on my mac so i took Nodal demo off my computer. I just bought Max for live recently so I'll be focusing on that now.

I'll see what kind of cool stuff I can use in Max for live though!

FWIW, I've been sending Nodal MIDI outputs to Reaper on my Mac and they play well together!

If anyone has Reaktor you should check out the UL - there are quite a few ensembles that are capable of this sort of thing

Do you have any examples? I know of several noise generators, but nothing with any real control.

Would have to check my hard drive at home to see what I have, but here's a couple that are in the same ball park:

Don't be put off by the lack of a plug-in version of Nodal. I use MIDIyoke to hook it up with Reaper and have had great results. The drones running behind one of my tracks 'Cold Sleep' (it's on my Soundcloud page) were made this way, and a verrrry long ambient track called 'O My Stars' was composed/generated exclusively with/by Nodal. As Vortex has discovered, it also lends itself very well to polyrhythms, because, with a bit of practice, you can 'read' rhythmic structures (like a 4/4 kick is shown as a square with a node at each corner - not a good example for ambient music I know, but you get the picture )

Having said all that in praise of Nodal, it's also worth pointing out that Noatikl (which is available as a plugin) is much more affordable now at 50 USD. I've taken the plunge with this too - it appears to be much deeper than Nodal, but then again the learning curve can be as steep or shallow as you want, because it's possible to get great results using just the presets. I think I'll find a place for both programs within my music (if my PC will stand it, maybe both within the same track :eek
