  • Csound Users?

I have been really digging into Csoundforlive, and I am really amazed at the power behind this. So far I have been mostly just testing the precreated instruments, as the actual programming stuff looks pretty complex. I want to buy a book on how to program this stuff, as it really seems perfect for creating all sorts of ambient drones!

csoundforlive.comIt looks great. It works great. It sounds... beyond great.CsoundForLive is a collection of over 120 real time audio-plugins that brings the ...

Best thing about the Csound language is it is FREE! I mean you get a tool like reaktor but for free, how cool is that? I like the idea behind CSOUNDforlive, because it lets you control csound .CSD files with your ableton midi. Csoundforlive has a free package to help introduce you to the idea behind it's integration with Ableton live. The more complex stuff is sold, but at super low prices..

It definitely might be capable of producing super analog sounds, but it can still produce very powerful synthesized sounds! The granular synthesis algorithms in it could be better, at least from what i've heard so far. I think something like Crusher-X or Reaktor do a way better job for granular.

However for what it's worth, how could you not pick this great package up? Especially if you bought the Maxforlive package!

Let me know if you need help setting it up.

Definitely tons of stuff out there!

If you are an ableton live user, I can help you set up how to use CSoundforlive. It is actually quite painless! You will need the Maxforlive extension however.

I am not affiliated with csoundforlive, I just think it is an amazing resource.

I just tested out a spectral morphing plugin in Csound for live and I found it is quite powerful! Maybe the best one out there that actually works good!

Interesting... By the titles of the tools, they seem similar to the Michael Norris Soundmagic Spectral...

                Ten Years After... or so....

I am using the time of my retirement to attend a course on electronic music at the local university. They use Csound very intensive. Programming Csound is not the topic of the course, that I am attending (it is more about analysing classical works by D. Oram, S. Gubaidulina, I. Xenakis, E. Varèse etc.), but the teacher demonstrated some things (e.g. beatings, granular effects) using Csound(Qt), so I decided to have a closer look at it.

The basics are simple, but I am afraid, that it takes a long time, to fully understand it.

Anyway - CsoundQt regularly crashes on my Win 11 PC, but Cabbage (https://cabbageaudio.com) is stable. And: I can export cabbage programms as VST plugins. That is nice. The only problem: it seems, the the PluginId is not written correctly to the binaries, so I can use only two plugins at the same time in NI Machine - one VST2 and one VST3 each. They must be of different types, Maschine cannot load two plugins (either VST2 or VST3) with the same wrong plugin Id. So now I am experimenting with VST wrappers...

My first experiments: a simple plugin to generate harmonic undertones, and a sort of FM wind chimes - hit one key, get 20 bells ringing. The last one still needs some more improvements, e.g. more random to make it more realistic. Or longer relase times for lower notes, and longer intervals between the bells then. And shorter release times and intervals for higher notes. If I find the time...

Addendum: CsoundQT and Cabbage are graphical front ends to Csound, both for Win and Mac - apart from the usual texteditor they provide a more ore less simple GUI to the Csound programs to edit parameters while the program is running. So Csound can react on MIDI (what it also can without these frontends, but then it is a bit more complicated) and is not a Stockhausen-like batch program as it was in the beginning.
