It depends on your needs. Absynth is an awesome synth... though perhaps not as 'singular' as it once was for ambient work. Massive can be very flexible as demonstrated by Signs' recent demo of the Safari soundset by Aiyn Zahev. And especially if you're exploring orchestral music Kontakt is pretty much essential. Then there is also Reaktor. I just have the el cheapo version not the more expensive version that has a ton of extra stuff, and I have no regrets. At least one of the components (and usually two or three) find their way into just about every track.

@ Nemo - yes I agree loads of interesting stuff in there. The fact that you keep coming back to use it on your tracks speaks to its usefulness - my intention was not to put down the individual parts of the package. I do have a copy of Komplete Elements...I'm just afraid of diving into too many new things before I get to know my way around some of the other things I already use...that said, I'd be specifically interested in Reaktor, maybe Massive. We'll see. One of these days

I asked myself the same question many times before I finally caved during one of their 50%-off sales. Now I'm extremely happy I did.

I just know that Absynth will find its way onto just about every track I create from here on in.

Also, although I don't necessarily love Kontakt itself, I love the instruments available for it. Such a huge variety.
