  • Reaktor 6.3 is out

As the subject says. Big news is a revamp of the blocks functionality, added another file format, Racks, where you can build modular racks with onscreen patch cables like vcv etc. Woo.

Unfortunately the cable ports are only on the included blocks and future (commercial?) ones. You can use the new blocks in a conventional ensemble with all the existing user library blocks (and your own creations) but theyll still need wiring as before in the structure view. Seems a missed opportunity, a bit half arsed, another layer of complexity which Reaktor really doesnt need. But fun to play with if you're happy with the included blocks.

Thanks for that info! There might be some other 'under the hood' improvements, as well, so I'll check into that as soon as I can- since I'm a Reaktor 6 user..

Oh definitely other fixes and stuff as well, the front panel patching and Racks is just the big news item.

Now I've played a while I may have softened a little; I see why they've done it this way (Racks are much smaller than ensembles when saved) and, shock horror, you can just go on using Reaktor as you did before, nothings removed so just ignore the extra layer if you want (as a lot of people do with Blocks generally).

Also a couple of free Rack packs have been released so quite a selection of modules now available. I'm not a hardcore modular patcher or anything so I'm thinking what's available is probably enough for when I want that kind of chaos in my life. No need for VCV (which doesn't run great on my laptop) etc, can do it all in Reaktor. Neat and tidy and less apps to think about.

Updated but not had a play yet.

Must admit that as much as I liked Blocks when I first installed Reaktor 6, I tend to gravitate towards Metaphysical Function every time I load it
I may not post anything useful, but at least I do it often

          Me too.

Blocks tend to cause my old CPU to emit smoke...

MF is very easy to lose yourself in. Have you tried any of the variations that are available in the User Library? There is one called Metaphysical Scenery that includes previous upgrades from the original dev plus it incorporates the NI Driver distortion effect for another layer of fun!

I am a big fan of Metaphysical Function, as well. I was using it when it was a stand-alone from Native Instruments. I still have it, in fact.

The rack format is a big step foreward - now one can see the cables and must not switch to to the b- view, which is mostly not really clear, most connections lie hidden under some other elements there. I tried just one rack/patch so far, but is ist really simple, far better than the old blocks.

And that's what's frustrating about it imo, it's great but you cant use your own custom blocks or UL ones (yet..?) Though still plenty to play with, the basic blocks, the prime ones (if you have them, I assume I got them because I have the full Reaktor) and the two freebie collections so far.

That is true - I am missing an ensemble to rack converter.... Don't know, whether this could be programmed...

I'm hearing noises on other forums that someone has hacked the ports onto a homemade block so you could at least use the front panel patching in the regular build/ensemble view. Someone else seemed to be suggesting the ports could be rolled out further in the future but that could just be conjecture.

Anyway, I had a play with racks last night (so using the basics, prime and the free eurorackt and toybox blocks). A decent selection of blocks to play with for sure. I would miss the prime ones (the previously available west coast, kodiak ones etc) but still worthwhile for people using the Player version and not the full version of Reaktor.
