  • Displate

Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but my eldest son bought an Alien themed "Displate" last year and is buying more this year... He quite likes the idea.

Basically, pictures are printed to metal sheet and are mounted by some magnetic/sticky arrangement.

Anyway, the real news is that I have set up an artist account there and for starters I have added a piece that I have called Energy and have used it lately on my SoundCloud and Bandcamp pages. Here's the Displate link:-

    https://displate.com/displate/739924

Bit of an experiment, obviously, as I do not expect anyone to want to buy this thing, especially considering the cost of the thing. Payback is small, at around 10%, although I do accept that it costs Displate a bit to process the thing.

    What do you reckon?

I'm now thinking about what to add next...

    cheers

That's really cool, I love it! I love the idea of printing it to metal. Sometimes an image looks best on materials other than paper, and I think yours is one.

      Thanks

My missus has bought me one for Christmas. Sounds a bit weird buying my own stuff but I am really curious as to how it looks "in the flesh," so to speak. Once I have it I'll take a picture and post it here.

      cheers

that's a great image - it will be fascinating to see it printed on metal.

i would suggest a great big grinning self portrait for your next piece ;)

Not at all, you just paid someone to render your art on metal. Thought it would be cool to have some of the covers I've done, but I'd like them in 4" squares.

              aoVI True enough...

Since then I have looked into other professional printing services. One prints on a selection of media including aluminium and MDF and will print at any size. Displate is restricted to that one format, which is a bit limiting. And you can't have borders or anything like that which I guess is because they can't 100% guarantee the aspect ratio.

In the past I treated myself to a slightly better quality printer which could print to CD's or anything up to 1/4" thick but it was getting used that infrequently that the ink cartridges (seven) kept blocking up and now it never gets used because it is difficult to find ink for it, as well as being quite old.

              cheers

I still use my inkjet printer when I want to make a CD cover occasionally, but lately I've just lapsed into releasing streaming albums on bandcamp and other places. I go as far as Photoshop or Vue to make the covers, but haven't done any actual printing in over a year. So I know what you mean by ink drying up in the cartridge- I've had that happen to me more than once!

                  Hi Avery

I can honestly say that I will never ever do a physical release of my sound stuff so it begs the question if I ever need a "decent" printer again. Every now and then Val says, "I'd like a print of that photo," and I'll print it out on some half decent matte photo paper with an average HP three in one printer. Looks okay when framed and it's not as if anyone picks them up and looks at them in detail. The ink cartridge for that is generally cheap and readily available and when that situation changes we'll replace it with a similar, more modern version.

If I ever print any of my graphic art again I will probably look into other so called "professional" services. Expensive, but can be impressive and the only real option for anything over A3 in size.

                  cheers

Okay, I've gone and put up my Displate. Here's how it is looking:-

Still a bit of tidying up to do so back to it...

yw.. by the way, my office/ studio is getting an upgrade- I ordered a workstation desk so I can get rid of the cluttered hutch I've been using- as one of my monitors died, the square one- and my wife's pc died a couple of days later, so we went and bought her a new all-in-one pc, and I inherited her 24" widescreen monitor. Took some doing just to get it on the desktop of the hutch, but the workstation will be flat on top so both monitors are even, and (hopefully) not cluttered! LoL.
