it is a good technique, what I usually do though is to write (and mix, as I do this continuously as I write) at a peak level of about -14dB (look into Bob Katz's "K-System") and has my monitors tuned so that -14 is a pleasant listening level. this way I will have to work pretty hard if I am to get the master to clip
