  • experience with Korg kaos pads

Thinking about getting one, it looks like the KP2 can be had cheaply, as can the KP 2 mini. Not surr I understand the difference in functionality between the two. Can anyone fill me in on some details?

I have never used one although several of the artists I like have. Korg doesn't have any info on the difference?

I think KP2 refers to the 2nd gen kaos pad from early 2000s whereas the mini KP2 is a relatively new iteration of the idea (ie. a lot more advanced)

If I still had any real hardware I'd probably jump on a mini kp2; for around £40 UK you have a nifty effects box with the xy pad, an mp3 player (micro SD card slot), live mic input and a built in speaker for lofi re-amping.

Seems tailor made for an experimental rig (replaying field recordings with effects, easy manipulation etc).
Latest release: never to be repeated

I have a mini kp2 and it's great fun. Mostly used it with my OP-1 as a battery-powered portable fx box, though I have to record into the mini and then back into the OP-1 to apply the effects and all. Works out okay.
        Meh.

I bought one for my son, second hand, and it is brilliant (according to him) I'm not allowed to play with it, just pay for it . I will try and find out a bit more about the make etc.

He has a very cool mum who is willing to go hungry to buy music equipment to support his career! If he had a beard it wouldn't be an ambient one, more drum and bass/dub step. He uses the Kaos pad with his mixing decks. I've not seen it/heard it in action as he's away studying music with Deep Blue Sound.

              So proud...

I had a KP3 and used it for live improvised ambient experimental music for 6-7years. It's very flexible and fun for this kind of thing. I passed it on as the glitchy bright sound was not so conducive to a move towards warmer ambient textures and I felt like I was relying on it too much. I regret getting rid of it every so often but the iPad apps LiveFX and FluxFX kinda make up for it no longer being in my possession.

I have now had first hand experience 😃 on the mini Korg KP2 Kaos pad, through the car aux stereo of all places. That's a fun gadget for sure! This was bought for £40 second hand and will be used mainly on live DJ sets.

Thanks for the responses all, can anyone tell me if it does any kind of pitch bend?

There are a couple of pitch manipulation algos if I remember correctly. I remember a granular one and a vocoder type one at least.

Well I got the KP mini 2..it's pretty cool so far, the touch pad is a little hard to work with, but i'm enjoying it. a Bit expensive for what it is, IMO...but a good addition to my setup.

I'd be interested in hearing how it helps/inspires/influences you in recording.

Well, i've switched to doing everything in pretty much one take now, occasionally loops are precorded, but most of it is improvised. As far as improvisation goes, it's a fantastic tool because of the touch pad.

Here's a couple tracks that I used it on prominently:

It has a lot of effects, so far my favorites are the shuttle looper and the fuzz distortion.

Nice to hear that there are more Kaoss Pad users out there I use a KP3 together with an SP-404. I like to work with that combo.
